Cranberry Vodka

CRANBERRY VODKA

Yield : 3 cups

  • 1 small orange
  • 12 ounce bag fresh cranberries, picked over and rinsed
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1  bottle of vodka (750 millileters)

1.Using a small paring knife, peel the rind off of the orange in large strips. The white “pith” in the peel is bitter, so you need to remove it. Run your knife horizontally through the orange strips to remove the white pith. Discard the  pith.

2.Place the cranberries, sugar, water and orange peel in a saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat. When it comes to a boil, reduce the heat to medium and cook the mixture for 5- 6 minutes or until the cranberries have popped.

3.Remove from the heat and let cool for about 10 minutes. Add the vodka and pour the mixture into heat-proof jar with a lid (one that holds at least 7 cups).

4.Place the sealed jar in a dark and cool spot for at least a week.

5.Strain the mixture into any container of your choice with a lid that can handle 3 cups. Discard the cranberries.

6.The vodka is now ready to go!  Serve it chilled “straight up” or over ice.

7.Another cocktail to try is mixing the cranberry vodka with a splash of orange juice and a splash of club soda. Garnish with a slice of orange.
