Gadgets

Ok. Take a deep breath. This is the longest list of the five categories of kitchen tools. Remember, you don’t need to buy everything on the list. You can add to it as you come across a recipe you like that might need a certain gadget that’s not already in your kitchen. So ready?

  • can opener
  • chef’s knife — I like an 8 inch one
  • cutting boards — buy plastic and buy two — one for meat and one for veggies
  • flexible spatula (preferably silicone) for flipping food — like eggs or burgers
  • flexible spatula for mixing food — think of all the cakes you want to bake
  • garlic press
  • hand mixer — electric — cheaper than buying a standing mixer
  • immersion blender — also called “stick” blender — cheaper than a food processor!
  • instant read thermometer — to check the temperature of meats to make sure they’re done
  • kitchen scissors — I like detachable for thorough cleaning
  • kitchen tongs – for moving bacon to a plate, turning over food, tossing salad and pasta
  • ladle
  • lemon juicer – just a cheap hand-held one so it catches the seeds, and really squeezes all the juice
  • meat pounder/tenderizer
  • mixing bowls — look for “nested” ones so you have assorted sizes
  • oven mitts
  • pepper mill
  • rolling pin
  • salt shaker
  • slotted spoon
  • small paring knife — 3 1/2 – 4 inches
  • vegetable peeler
  • wine opener
  • wire whisk
  • zester — this could be a Microplane — it’s to remove the zest from citrus fruits
